Our son spent the early years of his life in a children’s home prior to our adopting him. Before leaving the cinderblock building together to go home, we asked to collect his belongings. Sadly, he had none. We exchanged the clothes he was wearing for the new items we’d brought for him and also left some clothing for the other children. Even though I was grieved by how little he had, I rejoiced that we could now help meet his physical and emotional needs.
A few years later, we saw a person asking for donations for families in need. My son was eager to donate his stuffed animals and a few coins to help them. Given his background, he might have (understandably) been more inclined to hold tightly to his belongings.
I’d like to think the reason for his generous response was the same as that of the early church: “God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all” that nobody in their midst had need (Acts 4:33–34). The people willingly sold their own possessions to provide for one another’s needs.
When we become aware of the needs of others, whether material or intangible, may God’s grace be so powerfully at work in us that we respond as they did, willingly giving from our hearts to those in need. This makes us vessels of God’s grace as fellow believers in Jesus, “one in heart and mind” (v. 32). 

Extending Grace to Others

On this episode, Kelly McEllroy, from the Allentown Redevelopment Authority, joins us for an interview. Kelly has been in the real estate industry since 1999. She started with her new construction Real Estate License at Traditions of America. After working several years for New Construction projects, she ventured into the resale market. She worked for ERA Rudy Amelio and Century 21 Pinnacle. Her main concentrations were in Foreclosures, Property Management and Resale transactions.
Kelly recently joined the Allentown Redevelopment Authority as the Assistant Director, where she works with grant funding and involved with the government processes involved with redevelopment. One of the main things she has learned over the years is that houses need purpose, just like people; if they lose their purpose they start falling apart and it is costly to bring them back to life. This is especially true with Foreclosure’s and Blight properties. As with any transaction, being involved and invested from start to finish produces the best results. As we near the end of our week on simple Christianity, we look today at the simple truth of our freedom in Christ. Our sin and bondage often feels like a convoluted web that entangles us. Satan would like nothing more than to keep us foggy and confused about the freedom and righteousness bought for us through the precious blood of Jesus. Today I’m praying that chains are broken in God’s presence. May we gain clarity and deep understanding of the freedom afforded to us as children of God. May we adopt the simple truth of our freedom and truly be set free. Our Scripture for today comes from 2 Corinthians 3:17, and today's worship is Jubilee by Maverick City feat. Feel free to pause, jump back, or navigate the steps via the podcast chapters.Peach Tart1 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour3/4 teaspoon kosher salt3/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar1/4 cup vegetable or canola oil1/4 cup mild olive oil2 tablespoons whole milk1/2 teaspoon almond extract2 tablespoons cold, unsalted butter3 small ripe peaches (up to 5), pitted and thickly sliced (about 1/2-inch wide)Heat the oven to 425 degrees. In a mixing bowl, stir together 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon sugar. Stirring enables the salt and sugar to sift the flour, so you don’t need to sift it in advance. In a small bowl, whisk together the oils, milk and almond extract. Pour this mixture into the flour mixture and mix gently with a fork, just enough to dampen; do not over work it. Then, transfer the dough to an 11-inch tart pan (you can use a smaller one if needed), and use your hands to pat out the dough so it covers the bottom of the pan, pushing it up the sides to meet the edge. This will work if you pat firmly and confidently, but not if you curl your fingertips into the dough. It should be about 1/ 8-inch thick all around; trim and discard excess dough.In a bowl, combine 3/4 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt and the butter. (If your peaches are especially juicy, add 1 tablespoon additional flour.) Using your fingers, pinch the butter into the dry ingredients until crumbly, with a mixture of fine granules and tiny pebbles.Starting on the outside, arrange the peaches overlapping in a concentric circle over the pastry; fill in the center in whatever pattern makes sense. The peaches should fit snugly. Sprinkle the pebbly butter mixture over top (it will seem like a lot). Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until shiny, thick bubbles begin enveloping the fruit and the crust is slightly brown. Cool on a rack.
